SPECIAL ISSUE ON SHAMS AL-DĪN AL-SAMARQANDĪ

CALL FOR PAPERS

Shams al-Dīn al-Samarqandī, one of the leading figures of the renewal period, is a scholar renowned for his works in the fields of kalam, mathematics, astronomy, and logic.
A remarkable thinker, Samarqandī wrote classic works, as both independent texts and commentaries and made a great effort in the construction of new disciplines. Samarqandī’s invaluable contributions to Islamic thought are attested by his works on logic, science of disputation, kalam, philosophy, mathematics and astronomy, including al-Ṣaḥāʾif al-ilāhiyya and its commentary al-Maʿārif fī sharḥ al-Ṣaḥāʾif, Bishārāt al-Ishārāt, and Qisṭās al-afkār fī taḥqīq al-asrār. His Ashkāl al-taʾsīs, together with Qātogether with a’s commentary, is a classic that had for centuries been a madrasa textbook; and during the Ottoman period numerous commentaries and glosses were written about it. Another original work widely read throughout the Ottoman period, al-Risāla fī ādāb al-baḥth builds the art of disputation pertinent to the disciplines of philosophy, jurisprudence and kalam.
With his works, Samarqandī deeply influenced the authors of the classical madrasa curriculum, al-Taftāzānī and al-Jurjānī. Comparisons between Samarqandī’s thourgh and the legacies of Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī, Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī, Athīr al-Dīn al-Abharī, al-Nasafī, al-Bayḍāwī, al-Ījī, Ṣadr al-Sharīʿa, al-Taftāzānī, al-Jurjānī, Kemālpāshāzāde, al-Siyālkūtī, Munajjimbāshī and Gelenbevī will further clarify this so far understudied scholar’s contributions and place in Islamic intellectual history.
The 700th anniversary of Samarqandī’s passing is commemorated by Nazariyat Journal’s “Special Issue on Shams al-Dīn al-Samarqandī,” scheduled for publication in October/November 2022.
